About Expat Cove
Expat Cove publishes independent, source-checked guides for Americans moving abroad — visas, health insurance, banking and taxes. Our rule is simple: every number is dated and traced to a primary, official source, and we update a guide whenever the official rules change.
Why we exist
Most relocation content online is years out of date or quietly copied between sites. Income thresholds, insurance rules and tax regimes change every year — and acting on a stale figure can cost you a visa refusal or thousands of euros. Expat Cove fixes that by going to the official sources directly and showing our work.
How we research
We follow a single editorial standard on every page:
- One claim, one primary source. Figures come from official sources — Portugal's visa portal (vistos.mne.gov.pt), AIMA, gov.pt, consulates and registries — not from other blogs.
- Everything is dated. Each guide shows when it was last updated, so you can judge its freshness at a glance.
- We flag what changed. When an official rule moves (a new minimum wage, a fee increase, the SEF→AIMA transition, the NHR→IFICI tax change), we say so and update the affected numbers.
- We show the sources. Key claims link straight to the official page so you can verify them yourself.
Editorial independence & how we make money
Expat Cove is reader-supported. Some links to services we cover — such as travel-medical insurance or money-transfer accounts — are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission if you sign up through them, at no extra cost to you. This never changes what we recommend: our picks are based on whether a product actually meets the official requirement (for example, the €30,000 Schengen insurance minimum). Full details are in our affiliate disclosure.
Who we are
Expat Cove is run by a small editorial team that researches immigration and relocation rules full-time. We are not lawyers, immigration advisers or tax advisers, and our guides are general information, not personal advice — always confirm your own case against the official sources we link, or with a licensed professional.
